For over forty years the Carshalton Society has actively campaigned to preserve and improve the amenities of Carshalton, by protecting its open spaces from encroachment, by combating attempts to increase the capacity of its roads, and by encouraging good architecture.

The Society has taken a major part in many matters of public concern. It was closely associated with the scheme which led to the waterproofing of the Ponds. It successfully opposed attempts to sell off nearby parkland for redevelopment and to erect office blocks in the centre of the Village. Particular care has been taken to oppose the indiscriminate felling of trees, to maintain rivers and watercourses, to secure nature conservation, and to improve the scenic amenities of public spaces and recreation areas.

Planning applications are regularly inspected and investigated. The Society has given advice on numerous planning matters and made every effort to give individual people an effective voice in the planning process. The Society has also secured and been represented at a number of Public Inquiries.

In its early years the Society produced its own comprehensive Conservation Area scheme, which laid special emphasis on the need to reroute heavy through-traffic away from the centre whilst maintaining the facilities of the High Street shopping centre - a fight which still continues.

The history of the Village and its surroundings is another of the Society's interests and members give talks to local bodies.

The Society normally holds four open meetings a year, which can be attended free of charge by all who are interested in the work of the Society. The programmes include an up-to-date report on the latest planning proposals, often followed, after a break for refreshments, by a lecture or a more detailed study of a particular issue. Members receive a regular Newsletter.

The Society also organises the Carshalton Charter Fair, held in July. In 2020 it will not be held - Coronavirus - see you next year on 3rd July 2021
2009 was the 750th anniversary of the granting of the charter.

Between meetings, the administrative work of the Society is carried on by an executive committee whose members are elected annually. The Hon.
